The Vascular Surgery Review

Written By: Dr. Thomas Creeden

The Vascular Surgery In-Training Exam Review Book is a high-yield reference text designed to accommodate the aspiring vascular surgeon, & vascular surgeons in-training, both integrated residents & vascular surgery fellows. The note-style & bulleted format allows for easy navigation of complex information. Use this book to prepare for the VSITE, oral & written board exams, and most importantly, to review the pathologies & treatments for your patients on a daily basis.

The Why

Since 2006, there has been an exponential increase in the number of integrated vascular surgery training programs in the United States. This has allowed more trainees to obtain their goal of becoming a vascular surgeon, while bypassing the traditional route of general surgery residency followed by vascular surgery fellowship. As with all independent surgical residencies, annual in-service exams & written/oral board exams remain a cornerstone for assessment of knowledge.
The VSITE (Vascular Surgery In-Training Exam) is the fund of knowledge test taken on an annual basis by all integrated vascular surgery trainees, as well as vascular surgery fellows. While similar in structure to other surgical in-service exams, the majority of content is focused on vascular surgery topics. Although many vascular surgery reference textbooks exist, to date, there are very limited publications focused on VSITE & written board exam review. This represents a key unmet need as excellent textbooks do not necessarily serve as excellent exam review books. As more vascular surgery training programs continue to adopt and/or create integrated residences, this unmet need will only grow. It is with this gap in mind that we have created this book.

"Could not have finished residency without this book."
- PGY-5 Vascular Surgery Resident

"The Vascular Surgery Review Book helped me understand the higher level details of vascular surgery which helped me answer tough questions correctly on my rotation."
- Vascular Surgery Sub-Intern (MS4)

The How

Vascular surgery trainees should use this guide to aid their studies while progressing through training. Specifically, this book should serve as a high yield reference text that may be used to prepare for an in-service exam (VSITE), written & oral board exams, address patient specific vascular pathology, or review key concepts prior to patient assessments. As with all “review” texts, this is not intended to be an all inclusive reference, however, should be utilized as a condensed version of complete textbooks. The medical student or general surgery resident may find this high-yield reference text helpful while rotating on vascular surgery services. Currently available comprehensive vascular surgery textbooks are excellent and this guide does not intend to replace them. However, they are dense, wide-ranging, and not focused on the specific needs of trainees looking for a time-efficient way in which to review key learning points. And it is in this context that we invite the reader to this book.

The Process

The Vascular Surgery Review Book is the ultimate high-yield reference text which has been harvested from current vascular surgery textbooks, vascular surgery webinars, journal articles, case conferences & numerous individual presentations from vascular surgery leaders across the world. Condensed to less than 400 pages in a meticulously organized, “notes-style” format, this allows the reader to obtain their desired information with ease.

"Such an easy read, yet all inclusive. This book should be given to every vascular resident & fellow, every year."
- PGY-2 Vascular Surgery Resident
